Plot summary
Le Vengeur docks at Brest, and the Belgian sailor Georges Querelle goes ashore to La Feria, a bar and brothel kept by Madame Lysiane. Behind the bar is her husband Nono, who manages the house's illicit trade with the help of his friend Mario, a corrupt police captain. Querelle finds his brother Robert among Lysiane's men, and the two greet each other with an embrace that turns into slow, repeated punches to the belly. Querelle arranges to sell Nono a shipment of opium, and he means to sleep with Lysiane, a request that obliges him to throw dice with Nono first. Aboard the ship, Lieutenant Seblon watches his men and keeps his distance, in love with Querelle.
