Plot summary
Eight months after leaving Afghanistan, Donya cannot sleep. She lives in Fremont and works in San Francisco, packaging fortune cookies at a factory run by Ricky and Lin. Salim, a neighbor and fellow Afghan refugee, gives her his therapy appointment, and Dr. Anthony tells her he cannot prescribe sleeping pills until she comes to several sessions. She tells him she was among three translators at her base, the only one who reached the United States, and that her family in Kabul received death threats. Aziz, who owns a Middle Eastern restaurant, urges her to start dating, and she tells Salim that she longs for a partner.
