Grace Jones

Grace Jones, born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, has worked as a model, singer, songwriter, and actress. She began modeling in New York with Wilhelmina Models and then moved to Paris, where she modeled for Yves St. Laurent and Kenzo and appeared on covers of Elle and Vogue Hommes. In 1977 she signed to Island Records and became part of New York's Studio 54 disco world; her sound later embraced new wave, folding in reggae, funk, post-punk, and pop, with collaborators Sly & Robbie and Jean-Paul Goude. Her albums include Warm Leatherette (1980), Nightclubbing (1981), and Slave to the Rhythm (1985), and the video collection A One Man Show earned a Grammy nomination. As an actress, she played Zula in Conan the Destroyer (1984), May Day in A View to a Kill (1985), and a vampire in Vamp (1986), earning Saturn Award nominations for the first two and a win for the third, and she later appeared in Boomerang (1992).
