Brian Murphy
Biography
Brian Murphy was an English actor who started out in the theater, joining the Theatre Workshop and taking on many small parts during the 1960s and early 1970s. He mixed stage work with guest spots on television programs including Dixon of Dock Green, Callan, Z-Cars and The Avengers, and appeared in films including Sparrows Can't Sing (1963), The Boy Friend (1971) and The Devils (1971). After a role in an episode of Alcock and Gander, he was offered the part of George Roper in Man About the House, the sitcom that brought him wide recognition. When that show ended in 1976, he and Yootha Joyce starred in the spin-off George and Mildred, which ran for five series until 1979, and he later reprised the role in the George and Mildred film (1980). Other television work included Wizadora, Last of the Summer Wine and The Booze Cruise. He died in 2025.

Big break
By the early 1970s Murphy was thinking of quitting acting to sell insurance, but a guest spot on the sitcom Alcock and Gander so impressed its writers, Johnnie Mortimer and Brian Cooke, that they offered him the role in Man About the House that made him a household name.
Beyond film
Murphy released the 1978 single "Jogging" on the Pye label in the persona of his George and Mildred character George, and later said he had been told he had an excellent singing voice and did some training but lacked confidence.
Early training
While at RAF Northwood for his national service, Murphy met Richard Briers. After leaving the RAF, both aspiring actors appeared in Dramatic Society productions at the Borough Polytechnic Institute.
