Plot summary
A rare coin, the Brasher Doubloon, has gone missing from the collection of Elizabeth Murdock's late husband, and the wealthy widow wants it found. She hires the private detective Philip Marlowe, who expects a routine recovery job. The case instead turns violent, bringing him up against shady characters and crooks, and then murder. Mrs. Murdock's secretary, Merle Davis, is among those in her employ.

- Fred MacMurray, Victor Mature and Dana Andrews were each mentioned at different times as having been cast as Philip Marlowe in The Brasher Doubloon before Fox settled on George Montgomery, whose casting came in the final film of his 20th Century Fox contract.
- Fox said in May 1946 that George Montgomery would play the lead and that shooting would start in July, with Ida Lupino set to co-star; by June Lupino had dropped out and Nancy Guild replaced her.
