Plot summary
As a small boy, Pale Arrow lost his parents and grew up in the household of Wise Eagle, the Pawnee chief. Now a grown man, he sees Pawnee warriors ride down a wagon carrying two travelers who are trying to rejoin the train that is moving across Pawnee territory. He pulls the pair out and brings them back to the others. After that he and Wise Eagle come to an understanding: Pale Arrow will find out whether he can live among the white settlers, and he takes the name Paul Fletcher to act as the train's scout. Wise Eagle hopes the two peoples can keep the peace.
