Plot summary
Janet Frobisher writes mystery novels. She lives in an isolated house in Northern England. Her husband, Mr Preston, has a criminal past, and the two have been separated for a long time. Dr Henderson, a vet, is her nearest neighbor. Janet is in love with Larry Stevens, the fiancé of her secretary, Chris Dale. When Preston appears at the house, one of his criminal cohorts, George Bates, arrives asking for him.

- Barbara Stanwyck was envisioned for, and was going to play, the lead until she discovered her husband Robert Taylor had been unfaithful while making Quo Vadis, after which she did not want to make the film.
- Producer Dan Angel announced Gloria Swanson for the lead in November 1950, but she dropped out, saying she had received an offer to perform Twentieth Century on Broadway.
- Bette Davis and Gary Merrill became attached in March 1951, with Merrill replacing Leo Genn. Merrill wrote that neither liked the script but both wanted to work together in England for a large fee, and Davis was pleased that Emlyn Williams was in the cast.
- Emlyn Williams rewrote many scenes for Bette Davis and Gary Merrill, which Davis said gave the story some plausibility, though she recalled there was nothing but script trouble and the basic ills were never cured.
