Plot summary
Meg Fairfield lives in an English manor with her daughter Sydney, who is engaged to Kit Humphreys. Meg is planning to marry Gray Meredith. Hilary Fairfield, Meg's first husband, has spent fifteen years as a patient in a mental institution, and the family has blamed his troubles on shell shock from the war. On Christmas Eve the household holds a party, and the singing is dedicated to Gray. Sydney plays an unfinished sonata that Hilary wrote before he went to war.
