Plot summary
Monsieur Blanc, the proprietor of a small seaside hotel in Antibes, is preparing for his wedding to Henriette when she leaves him for someone she met only the day before. The guests are shocked and skeptical, except for Robert Stirling, an American author, who has witnessed love at first sight. He tells of a time before the war, when Linda Venning, a British widow, was a guest on his yacht anchored off Monte Carlo. He administers her estate while she continues her charitable work. One evening he takes her to the casino and tells her to watch the gamblers' hands, which reveal stories. Linda fixes on a young man whose hands show deep anxiety as he loses. She follows him outside and, believing he is suicidal, urges him away from a bridge over the train tracks.
