Storm in a Teacup (1937) on Netflix

Plot summary

Frank Burdon, a young English reporter, arrives in the Scottish town of Baikie, where Horace Skirving hires him for the Baikie Advertiser, a paper that prints nothing scandalous. Frank falls for Victoria Gow, just home from school in Paris and the daughter of Provost William Gow, the town's respected leader. The Provost seeks a new party's nomination for the Scottish Parliament on a Scotland for the Scottish platform, and Frank is sent to interview him. The expected piece is a flattering account of the Provost's beliefs, but Frank instead writes about Honoria Hegarty, an ice cream cart vendor whose dog Patsy was seized and is to be put down over an unpaid license fee and fine. He knows the article will cost him his job. Victoria wants to stand by her father, though she agrees with Frank's point.
