Plot summary
Charles Staggers is a London busker approaching forty. He recites the classics in the street with his friends Arthur Smith and Gentry, a musical duet, though his act has shifted with his moods and he once worked as a ventriloquist. One evening he clashes with a young woman, then learns her situation: Libby has no home, sleeps in an empty house up for rent, and can sing and dance. He takes her into the troupe, turning the trio into a quartet. The gold cigarette case she steals that night belongs to Harley Prentiss, a songwriter, and their song-and-dance act catches his attention.
