Conrad Janis
Biography
Conrad Janis was an American actor and jazz trombonist whose movie and TV roles ran from the 1950s and 1960s through 2012. Born in Manhattan, he tried out for a road company at 13 and stayed two years, also doing radio voice work. He appeared in the pre-Broadway run of Dark of the Moon, was spotted by a Hollywood talent scout, and made his Broadway debut in 1945. That year brought his first film, Snafu, and he went on to Margie and the noir The Brasher Doubloon (1947). On television he played Edward on Bonino, guest-starred on Get Smart and The Golden Girls, and played Mindy's father Frederick across 53 episodes of Mork and Mindy. His later films included The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox (1976) and The Buddy Holly Story (1978). A champion of traditional jazz, he led the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band, which played Carnegie Hall to sold-out houses on eight occasions.

Beyond film
Conrad Janis formed the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band in the late 1970s; the group played the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson several times and gave eight sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall.
A change of course
In 1954 Janis entered a NASCAR Grand National Series race, placing 39th at the Linden Airport. He belonged to an amateur sports car group and used the false name J. Christopher to keep his amateur status.
First role
At 13, Janis won an audition for a road company and stayed with it for two years. He also started doing radio voice work during that period.
Big break
Janis landed a part in Dark of the Moon while it was still in its pre-Broadway run, and a Hollywood talent scout noticed him there. He remained with the show when it moved to New York City, so his Broadway debut came in March 1945.
Beyond film
In 1949 Janis assembled a band of jazz musicians he idolized, with James P. Johnson on piano, Henry Goodwin on trumpet, Edmond Hall on clarinet, Pops Foster on bass, Baby Dodds on drums, and Janis himself on trombone.
