Clayton Moore
Biography
Clayton Moore was an American actor who became inseparable from one role, the masked Western hero of The Lone Ranger. Born in Chicago in 1914, he was a circus acrobat by age eight, later a model, and moved to Hollywood in the late 1930s for stunt and bit work. Around 1940 he adopted the stage name Clayton, took leads in Republic serials such as Ghost of Zorro, and appeared in B Westerns. With the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, he worked on training films including Target-Invisible. In 1949 he landed the title part on The Lone Ranger, the first Western written for television, which became ABC's first big hit and drew an Emmy nomination in 1950. He played 169 of the 221 episodes, left for a season and returned. For decades he toured in costume as the character. In 1982 he entered the Stuntman's Hall of Fame, and in 1990 the Western Performers Hall of Fame.

A role that slipped away
John Hart took over Moore's role in the third season, reportedly because of a contract dispute, and Moore came back for the last two seasons. Moore said the producers never told him why he was replaced or rehired.
A change of course
Athletic as a boy, Moore joined the circus as an acrobat when he was eight years old. In 1934 he performed a trapeze act at the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago.
A change of course
As a young man, Moore found success as a John Robert Powers model. In the late 1930s he moved to Hollywood, where he took work as a stuntman and bit player between modeling jobs.
About the name
Around 1940, the Hollywood producer Edward Small talked Moore into taking "Clayton" as his stage name, a change Moore later described in his 1996 autobiography I Was That Masked Man.
A first
Moore became so linked with the masked man that his Hollywood Walk of Fame star, the only one as of 2006, includes his character's name with his own. It reads Clayton Moore and The Lone Ranger.
