Bud Collyer

Biography

Bud Collyer, an American radio actor and announcer who also hosted game shows, became one of the first big stars of television game shows. Born in Manhattan, he studied law but turned to broadcasting after radio work paid better. By 1940 he was a familiar voice on three major radio networks, appearing in Terry and the Pirates and announcing soap operas including The Guiding Light. That year he began voicing Clark Kent and Superman on radio's The Adventures of Superman, a role he also played in animated theatrical shorts until Famous Studios moved recording to New Jersey, which conflicted with his New York radio schedule. He and Joan Alexander later reprised their roles for the 1966 animated series The New Adventures of Superman. As a host, he led Winner Take All, Beat the Clock from 1950 to 1961, and To Tell the Truth for fourteen years starting in 1956. Collyer died in 1969.
