Jack Mercer

Biography

Jack Mercer was an American voice actor who became the voice of Popeye the Sailor and Felix the Cat. Born in Worthington to vaudeville and Broadway performers, he started at Fleischer Studios as an inbetweener and also appeared on vaudeville and legitimate stages. He won the role of Popeye after Lou Fleischer heard him singing the theme, having imitated William Costello's version, and his first cartoon was King of the Mardi Gras in 1935. He kept the part for over four decades, through the Fleischer and Paramount Famous Studios years, King Features Syndicate television cartoons and a Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning show, and he read the opening lines of the 1980 live action film. He also provided Wimpy, Poopdeck Pappy and Popeye's nephews, voiced characters in Gulliver's Travels (1939) and Mr. Bug Goes to Town (1941), did every voice for the Felix the Cat television cartoons, and wrote comedy scripts for Paramount, Deputy Dawg and Milton the Monster.
