• Scouting desert locations, Jesús Franco pushed south past the big coastal cities to the region of Tindouf, where he finally found the vistas he had imagined. Producer Marius Lesoeur vetoed the site, though, when a local partner warned it was contested territory and they might be extorted by the Polisario Front.
• The cast was asked to shoot their dialogue in English to facilitate a U.S. version, which was a particular problem for French actor Henri Lambert, who had no command of the language whatsoever but soldiered on with professionalism.
• Though largely devoid of graphic content, Oasis of the Zombies was placed on Section 3 of the Director of Public Prosecutions's Video Nasties list, meaning any copy could be confiscated and destroyed even though the film was not considered extreme enough to warrant a conviction.
• Oasis of the Zombies was made to expand on 1981's Zombie Lake, which had done well for Eurociné. Jesús Franco was supposed to direct Zombie Lake but quit after it was scaled back, reconciled with Eurociné's Marius Lesoeur and his son Daniel, and took on the new film.
• Like many Eurociné productions, the film makes extensive use of stock footage: its World War II combat scenes were lifted from the 1971 Italian feature Heroes Without Glory.
• Eurociné struck a belated deal with Spanish producer Arturo Marcos Tejedor for the Spanish market, and the new footage was commissioned to qualify for Spanish tax relief, shot nearly a year after principal photography during filming of Franco's Diamonds of the Kilimandjaro.
• As a fallback option, Franco proposed the island of Gran Canaria because it possessed a desert which, while small, could suffice for the film, was easily accessible from the Spanish mainland, and had a population of camels.
