Red Skelton

Biography

Red Skelton was an American entertainer whose radio and television programs ran from 1937 to 1971. He started out young, learning comedy and pantomime in a traveling medicine show before moving through showboats, burlesque, and vaudeville, where his Doughnut Dunkers sketch helped bring him wider notice. His radio work began with a 1937 guest spot on The Fleischmann's Yeast Hour and led to hosting duties on Avalon Time and The Raleigh Cigarette Program; he had a regular radio show until 1957. On film, he debuted in Having Wonderful Time in 1938 and starred in many musicals and comedies, among them Panama Hattie (1942), Bathing Beauty (1944), and Ziegfeld Follies (1945). The Red Skelton Show arrived on NBC in 1951, later becoming The Red Skelton Hour on CBS in 1962; CBS dropped it in 1970, and he wrapped his final regular TV season at NBC in 1971. He received Hollywood Walk of Fame stars for radio and television.
