Ben Blue
Biography
Ben Blue was a Canadian-born comedian and actor who worked in America on stage, in films, and on television for close to fifty years. He was born in Montreal and grew up in Baltimore, where as a boy he won a Charlie Chaplin impersonation contest. By fifteen he was with a touring company, and he later worked as a stage manager and owned nightclubs. In the 1920s he drummed for Jack White and His Montrealers, a comedy band that moved to the United States and appeared in King of Jazz (1930). Blue then became a solo comic with a bald, silly stage character, and Hal Roach put him in the Taxi Boys shorts. He moved on to Paramount and MGM, had a short-lived 1950 series, The Ben Blue Show, and took film parts in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! (1966), and The Busy Body (1967).

About the name
Around that time he gave himself the name 'Ben Blue'. He later explained that on theater marquees it would fit better than 'Bernstein'.
Beyond film
Blue played drums in a band that stressed comedy and kept interacting with its joke-cracking leader. He sometimes wore a ridiculously false beard while telling corny jokes.
A role that slipped away
Producer Hal Roach featured Blue in his Taxi Boys comedy shorts, but replaced him with other comedians because his dopey character was an acquired taste.
