Plot summary
Paul Verlaine is an established poet of 27 living in Paris with Mathilde, his young pregnant wife, in the house of her wealthy father. In 1871 he receives the poems sent from the provinces by a teenage Arthur Rimbaud and invites the boy to stay. Rimbaud arrives without manners or any sense of decency, upsetting Verlaine's in-laws and the closed world of French poets. Married respectability has been stifling Verlaine's talent, and he drinks absinthe. Where others see only rudeness, he finds the youth invigorating, and he is drawn to both the boy's body and the originality of his mind.
