Plot summary
Horace Vendig lives as a wealthy philanthropist, and the story of his climb begins in an unhappy, broken home. Richer neighbors took him in, and as a poor young man he charmed his way into their circle and persuaded Martha Burnside's father to cover his Harvard education. He kept reaching for more money, courting women and leaving them when they stopped being useful. Vic Lambdin, a friend from those early years, is invited to a party at Horace's mansion and brings Mallory Flagg, who looks remarkably like Martha. The reunion of the two men stirs up resentments from their past.
