Lucille Bremer

Biography

Lucille Bremer was an American film actress and dancer. Born in Amsterdam, New York, she moved to Philadelphia, where she studied ballet. She began as a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall and appeared in Broadway musicals including Panama Hattie and Lady in the Dark. After producer Arthur Freed saw her in a nightclub, she signed with MGM, trained with acting coach Lillian Burns, and was groomed in the Freed Unit. Her screen debut came as Rose Smith, Judy Garland's older sister, in Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), earning excellent notices. She starred opposite Fred Astaire in Yolanda and the Thief (1945), a box-office failure for which she took much of the blame. Bremer later danced with Astaire in Ziegfeld Follies (1945) and had dramatic scenes and dances with Van Johnson in Till the Clouds Roll By (1946). After MGM lost interest, she moved to Eagle-Lion, where her final starring role was in Behind Locked Doors (1948).
