Plot summary
Robots are commonplace in 1991, and a machine that malfunctions and becomes dangerous is called a runaway. The police keep a division trained in robotics for such cases. Sgt. Jack Ramsay, a veteran officer, joined the squad after his fear of heights let a criminal escape and kill a family. He and his new partner, Karen Thompson, are called to the squad's first robotic homicide, a household robot that murdered the family it served. Inside the machine Ramsay finds integrated circuits that cancel a robot's safety features and turn it against people. The circuits are made from master templates, so they can be mass-produced.

- Runaway was Gene Simmons's first proper acting role. The Kiss bassist had turned down a television series meant to trade on his band fame, and parts in Flashdance and Doctor Detroit, because he wanted to begin with something serious rather than a musical or a comedy.
- Simmons got the villain Dr. Luther after simply meeting writer-director Michael Crichton, with no reading required, and Crichton told him not to memorize the script or talk to his acting coach, only to try different things.
- Runaway's original music was composed by Jerry Goldsmith, and the score was the first all-electronic soundtrack of the composer's career.
