Plot summary
In 2009, the very rich stay alive by buying bodies from the past: mercenaries called bonejackers travel back and snatch people at the moment of their deaths. Alex Furlong, a Formula One racer, is taken a split second before his 1991 crash and wakes in a New York of scavengers and killers. A hit squad ambushes his captors and he breaks away from Victor Vacendak, the mercenary who took him on behalf of the McCandless Corporation, which intends a mind transfer into his healthy body. With no rights in this future, Alex looks for Julie Redlund, the woman he was going to marry, now fifteen years older, an executive at McCandless.

- The original cut of Freejack tested so badly that producer Ronald Shusett was brought in to re-shoot around 40% of the film, adding character scenes and humor.
- Emilio Estevez said director Geoff Murphy let the film down by focusing too much on action in his original cut, while Murphy blamed interference from Morgan Creek and asked for his possessory credit to be removed.
- Linda Fiorentino was originally going to play Julie Redlund but dropped out because of scheduling conflicts, and Rene Russo was signed on to replace her.
