Plot summary
In 1987, Shaun Douglas is seven and lives in East Orange, New Jersey, with his mother, Jackie. His father, Robert E. Douglas, known as Skeet, is a small-time marijuana dealer arrested for the murders of two women. Skeet says he is innocent, but a jury convicts him and he receives a life sentence. Jackie changes her son's name to Rob Peace so that he is not associated with his father, though the name keeps a link to Skeet's first name. Rob earns top grades at St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, which later pays his tuition at Yale University.
