Plot summary
Frankie runs the Road House, an unruly bar in Glass Key, a community in the Florida Keys, and she offers Elwood Dalton the job of head bouncer. Dalton is a former UFC middleweight who cons fighters in underground bouts. He hesitates, then rides a bus to her establishment. There he meets Charlie, a teenager who works in a bookstore alongside her father Stephen. A motorcycle gang troubles the bar, and Dalton hauls the wounded men to a hospital, where Ellie treats him. The gang answers to Ben Brandt, a local crime boss. Dalton settles onto Frankie's disused houseboat and drills the other bouncers.

- R. Lance Hill, who wrote the 1989 original, sued MGM and Amazon on February 27, 2024 to block the remake's release, alleging copyright infringement and that the studio used AI-generated voices of the actors to finish the film during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. MGM and Amazon countersued that May.
- Director Doug Liman wrote a Deadline Hollywood editorial blasting Amazon for skipping a wide theatrical release after buying MGM, despite its announced $1 billion investment in 12-15 theatrical films a year, and said he would not attend the SXSW premiere in protest. Jake Gyllenhaal said Amazon had made the streaming release clear, and Liman attended after all.
- Amazon gave Jake Gyllenhaal and the filmmakers a choice: a $60 million production budget with a theatrical release, or an $85 million budget to send the film straight to streaming. They chose the bigger budget and the streaming release.
- MMA fighter Ronda Rousey was cast in the lead role of an earlier Road House in September 2015, after Rob Cohen and Michael Stokes vacated the project, and Nick Cassavetes then boarded as writer-director. The film sat on hold until 2021, when Jake Gyllenhaal and Doug Liman took over.
- Jake Gyllenhaal shot a scene with former UFC fighter Jay Hieron following the ceremonial weigh-ins for UFC 285 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, in front of the fans attending and UFC president Dana White, and a walkout scene was filmed during an intermission.
- Volker Bertelmann was set to compose the film's score, but in January 2024 it was announced that he had left the project and Christophe Beck replaced him.
- Road House was the first film released as part of the centennial anniversary celebration of MGM's founding, with a "100th anniversary" variant of the studio's 2021 logo unveiled at the start of the film.
