Plot summary
In sessions with his therapist, Mort Rifkin recounts a trip to San Sebastián with Sue, his much younger wife. Sue handles press for Philippe, a French director whose anti-war film is being celebrated, and Mort becomes jealous as their relationship moves into open flirtation. His fears surface in nightmares drawn from black and white classics. Chest pains bring him to Joanna Rojas, a Spanish doctor who once lived in New York, and he fakes health problems to keep her attention.
