Plot summary
Anat Kamm was convicted of espionage in Israel and branded a traitor. She has moved to the United States and earned a degree at Columbia University, but the record of her case follows her. She needs employment to extend her visa and does not find it, so a return to Israel looks unavoidable. Before that, she sets out on a drive from New York to California, with a meeting with Daniel Ellsberg, the whistleblower in the Pentagon Papers case, as a destination. The trip comes during her final months in the country, and it is a chance to enjoy the freedoms she still has.
