Plot summary

At a fabric dyeing mill, the owner, Wang, hires Manchu enforcers to raise output and cuts the workers' wages to pay them; those who object are beaten. In a tea house the workers meet Chu Jen-chieh, a good-hearted trickster in monk's robes and the foreman's younger brother. He offers to help, though he knows no kung fu. With the foreman's assistant, Ah Chao, he plans to pass himself off as San Te, the abbot of Shaolin's 36th Chamber, and frighten the Manchu into restoring the full wages. When the impersonation falls apart, a guilty Jen-chieh sets out for the Shaolin temple, hoping the monks will take him as a pupil.
