Plot summary
Manchu officials in Guangdong hold power over the Han Chinese, and the school run by Fong Sai-Yuk's father is one they threaten to close. Sai-Yuk is a gifted fighter but a poor student and a constant troublemaker, and he makes things worse by fighting the Manchu leader. To save the family's honor and keep the school open, his mother strikes a deal with the monk San Te, who gives the boy refuge in the 36th Chamber, a training hall for non-monks. Sai-Yuk arrives full of pride and short on respect for authority. He keeps slipping out of the temple at night to the Manchu-governed town, then boasts about his trips to the other pupils.
