Plot summary
Ho To studies kung fu in 1930s Shanghai. His wealthy father arranges a marriage for him to a young woman from a Japanese family he knows through business. Ho To refuses at first and pretends to be ill, then changes his mind once he sees his bride, Kung Zi. After the wedding he learns that she trains in karate, which he calls violent and unladylike, and he urges her toward Chinese styles. They quarrel over which country's martial arts are better, and Kung Zi returns to Japan. Ho To mails her a letter belittling Japanese martial arts, hoping the insult will bring her back. Kung Zi's childhood friend Takeno, a ninjutsu expert, reads it instead and comes to China with a group of Japanese masters, saying Ho To will face a different specialist each day.
