Plot summary
Irene Kelly's daughter Anna was murdered by a restaurant cook named Neville. Using a machine that carries her across parallel universes, Irene has hunted down and killed his other selves in one world after another. In one of those worlds she meets Mia, a teenage runaway whom Neville intends to kill. Irene drives him off, and the girl survives. Irene sends her away, then learns that the teenager has taken her gun and goes after her. Mia is hitchhiking toward Neville's hideout, meaning to kill him herself. Irene catches up with her, and the two agree to work together against him.
