Plot summary

Sakura Nishi goes to China as a Japanese army nurse during the Second Sino-Japanese War. She is first assigned to a ward of men with chronic illnesses, and she is afterward moved to a field hospital where doctors and medicine are too few for all the wounded who arrive. There she works with Dr. Okabe, a surgeon whose days are filled with amputations, and she gives what comfort she can to the soldiers in the crowded wards. One of them has lost both arms. Nishi falls in love with Okabe, who is addicted to morphine and impotent, and she follows him to the front.
