Plot summary
Yumiko and her husband Hiroshi, an employee of the Ministry of Economy, are preparing to leave for the United States when a car accident kills Hiroshi. Shiro, who was driving the car, is acquitted at the hearing that follows, but he feels responsible and offers Yumiko a monthly installment. She refuses at first. Hiroshi's family then disowns her and leaves her without an inheritance, and she accepts the money. With little to live on, Yumiko returns to her hometown and works at the inn run by her sister Ayako near Lake Towada. Shiro's employers reassign him to a branch in the same area.
