Reiko Morita, a war widow, rebuilt her late husband's family grocery shop and has kept it running for eighteen years. A newly built supermarket puts the store's business in danger, and her sisters-in-law want to convert the shop into a supermarket of their own and force Reiko out. The only member of the family on Reiko's side is her brother-in-law Kōji, twenty-five years old, who drinks and gets into fights.
