Plot summary

In 1946 Sakie Togashi receives the notice of her husband's death, with no date on it and a cause entered only as deceased. Sergeant Katsuo Togashi's widow raises their daughter Tomoko alone. When the Military Family Survivor Benefits Law is enacted six years later, the Ministry of Welfare turns down her claim on the grounds that Katsuo deserted in New Guinea in August 1945. The army's records burned at the end of the war, and inquiries sent to the other men of his unit brought no answer from four of them. Sakie finds those four men one by one and asks each of them what her husband actually did.
