Plot summary
T.J. Detweiler and his five best friends leave fourth grade behind and start fifth grade at Third Street Elementary School. The new year brings unwelcome changes: the school has no pizza, the playground is gone, and the lockers are missing. Their teacher is Miss Finster, the assistant teacher who used to monitor recess and is now in charge of their classroom. T.J. takes the situation hardest and wants to stand up for the gang and make the school better. Vince LaSalle, Spinelli, Mikey Blumberg, Gretchen Grundler, and Gus look to T.J. as their leader while they adjust to fifth grade.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Recess was the only series to cross over with Lilo & Stitch: The Series that was not a Disney Channel Original Series, and its production had already ended before Lilo & Stitch first aired; the episode "Lax" sent T.J. and the gang to Hawaii.
- Disney credited Recess's creators by their first names only, because the studio did not want their full names on the series to overshadow Walt Disney's name.
