Plot summary
Carla works as a secretary for a construction company in Paris. She is nearly deaf, reads lips to follow conversations, and her colleagues mock her without knowing about her hearing. She is overworked and under-appreciated, and after she faints from exhaustion, her boss offers her an assistant. Paul applies first. He is an ex-convict on parole with no office qualifications, and Carla hires him. His easy manner eases her loneliness, though she turns down his early advances. They become a team, using questionable methods to improve her standing at work.
