Plot summary
Max is the son of a wealthy French wine-growing family and has given his life to one aim: putting criminals behind bars. Now a police inspector, he is still bothered by a band of burglars who slipped away from him. He meets Abel, who steals scrap and plunders construction sites around Nanterre with a small group of hoodlums, and decides to push them into a big job and seize them in the act. Pretending to be the head of a small bank branch that receives large sums at regular intervals, he gets close to Lily, a German-born prostitute and Abel's companion, and wins the backing of his commissioner, while hiding that he set the whole thing in motion. A feeling grows between Max and Lily, though he keeps his distance and works on the band through her.
