Plot summary

Sonia, eighteen, has just given birth to a son she names Jimmy. She wants Bruno, the baby's father, to find steady work so they can raise the child together. Bruno, twenty, scoffs at the idea of a traditional job. He supports himself through petty crimes with Steve, a fourteen-year-old associate. While Sonia is in the hospital, Bruno sublets her small apartment to another couple. He sleeps in a homeless shelter or in a shack by the river that he calls his own. When Sonia returns home, she finds the apartment rented out. She seeks out Bruno, and he takes Jimmy for a walk while she waits to collect her benefits.
