Plot summary
Gummi and Kiddi are sheep farmers in an isolated valley in Iceland, their houses standing side by side on the family farm. Their flocks descend from an old breed, and their rams win prizes, yet the brothers have not spoken in forty years. Kiddi drinks and has a temper; Gummi is sober and owns the land. Scrapie is found in one of Kiddi's rams, then on other farms, and the authorities order every sheep in the valley slaughtered and the barns disinfected. With the sheep gone, many farmers see no future in the valley. Kiddi refuses to let his animals be killed, and Gummi searches for a way to save the breed.

- Grímur Hákonarson's story came from his own father, who told of two brothers sharing the same land who fell out over a woman and stopped speaking to each other for 40 years. Grímur saw the tragicomic side of such feuds, saying they happen in rural Iceland and beyond.
- To prepare for their roles, Icelandic actors Sigurður Sigurjónsson and Theodór Júlíusson worked on a sheep farm, and most of the other parts were played by real farmers, as was the film's sheep trainer.
