Plot summary

Marie Haist, who answers to Mimi, is in her fifties when an unfaithful husband and a divorce put her out on the streets of Santa Monica. She sleeps in parking lots and doorways. On a stormy night she finds shelter between the rows of washers in a laundromat, and its owner, more generous than not, lets her remain. The fluff and fold customers who come through get to know her, drawn by her conviction that the past is the past and by her taste for pink. Over time her circle widens beyond the neighborhood to Hollywood celebrities who count her a friend. At 89 she is still there.
