Plot summary
Beecham House is a home for musicians who have retired from the profession. Reg, Wilf and Cissy, opera singers who worked together many times, live there, as does Cedric Livingstone, a former director. Money is short, and each year a gala on Giuseppe Verdi's birthday brings in funds that could keep the house running. Some prominent singers have died or declined to appear, and Cedric is looking for a way to fill the program. Reg is shocked when his former wife, the soprano Jean Horton, arrives to live there; nobody warned him, and the two parted on sour terms. She is the soprano missing from a celebrated Rigoletto recording, and Cedric hopes the four singers on it will perform its quartet together, but Jean vowed never to sing again.
