Plot summary
A claim for unemployment benefits has turned into a fraud charge for Richard Poulenc, who is homeless and jobless in Paris. Avoiding nine months in jail means finding his estranged wife, Catherine Sperry, and having her confirm that she is still married to him, even though she has wed Don Sperry, the governor of Iowa, who has political ambitions and files American tax returns. Catherine lives in the United States, beyond his reach, until Richard learns that she and the governor are coming to Paris for an international conference at the Hotel Charles VII. Getting inside will take a disguise.
