Plot summary
Sandy Brooks wants a baby, but her husband Jeff writes for television and is too stressed for sex. The couple goes on a pleasure cruise, where they meet Claire and King Banner. The two couples drink heavily, and after returning to their cabins, they end up swapping partners. Sandy and Claire each discover she is pregnant and must learn whether Jeff or King is the father of her baby.

- Promises! Promises! was the first Hollywood sound-era feature release to show a mainstream star nude, Jayne Mansfield. That distinction would have gone to Marilyn Monroe, who shot a nude scene for George Cukor's Something's Got to Give in 1962 but died before the film was finished.
- A June 1963 issue of Playboy with nude photos of Jayne Mansfield led to an obscenity charge against Hugh Hefner, who was arrested by Chicago police; the trial ended in a hung jury and acquittal, and copies of the issue sold for as much as $10.
- On its 1963 theatrical release, Promises! Promises! was banned in Chicago, Cleveland and several other cities, but a Cleveland court later ruled that its nude scenes were not obscene.
- Tommy Noonan and Jayne Mansfield argued so much during production that Noonan, the film's producer and star, brought in 20th Century Fox publicist Jet Fore to keep peace on the set.
- Tommy Noonan offered the role of Claire to Mamie Van Doren, who turned it down; Marie McDonald instead played the part in what became her final screen appearance.
- Mansfield's first and longest nude scene, lasting 59 seconds, has her singing "I'm In Love" seminude in a foam-filled bathtub; she reportedly drank champagne to relax before appearing nude in front of the camera.
