Victor Lundin
Biography
Victor Lundin was an American character actor who grew up in Chicago, where his father had a job at a movie theater and the boy's visits there made him want a career in film. He trained as an opera singer in high school, took small parts in Chicago radio programs, studied music at Roosevelt University, and won a role with the Lyric Opera of Chicago before choosing to head for California instead of studying in Italy. He became known for playing tough men and Native Americans and, by his own count, made over 100 film and television appearances. Those included Machine Gun Kelly in Ma Barker's Killer Brood (1960), a lead as Friday in Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964), and Promises! Promises! (1963), plus work for directors Robert Wise and George Stevens. On television he was one of the Penguin's henchmen on Batman and, in a 1967 Star Trek episode, the first Klingon seen on screen. He died in 2013.

A first
In 1967, Lundin played the Klingon Lieutenant in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Errand of Mercy", the first appearance of the Klingons in the franchise. He walked into frame moments before John Colicos' Kor, making him the first Klingon on screen.
Early training
Lundin trained as an opera singer while at Lane Technical College Prep High School and took small roles in Chicago broadcast radio productions such as Mystery Theater and Captain Midnight.
A role that slipped away
Lundin studied music at Roosevelt University for a year before landing a role in the Lyric Opera of Chicago's Don Giovanni. That led to a chance to study in Italy, but he declined it and moved to California instead.
A change of course
Lundin's first Hollywood jobs were as a singer, not an actor. He made 24 appearances on The Red Rowe Show and also appeared on the variety show Hootenanny, both times as a folk musician.
