Trailer

Plot summary

Vicki Carpenter wants a new dress for the Hamilton High prom, but her religious mother Virginia refuses to buy one. Vicki searches the school prop room, where a trunk holds the cape and crown from the 1957 crowning of Mary Lou Maloney, who burned to death on stage at that prom. She takes the accessories and leaves them at school overnight, releasing the dead queen's spirit. Bill Nordham, who took Mary Lou to the 1957 prom, is now the school principal, and his son Craig is Vicki's boyfriend. Vicki begins having surreal, nightmarish hallucinations involving Mary Lou, and she tells Buddy Cooper, who was at the 1957 prom and is now a Catholic priest.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Prom Night II (1987)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • It was made as a standalone film called The Haunting of Hamilton High and retitled to capitalise on the success of Prom Night, which Peter R. Simpson also produced. The only narrative connection between the two is that they are set at the same high school.
  • Producer Peter Simpson and The Samuel Goldwyn Company reshot a significant portion of the film before production finished, employing screenwriter Ron Oliver to direct the new scenes himself on a budget of $100,000. Oliver sought advice from director Wes Craven before undertaking them.
  • The surrealistic sequence in which Vicki Carpenter collapses into a chalkboard that becomes a metallic liquid runs only 45 seconds, but the crew scheduled five days for it at an estimated $2,000 an hour. Effects coordinator Jim Doyle laid the blackboard flat on the floor and filmed it to look upright.
  • Screenwriter Ron Oliver said the favourable review in the Los Angeles Times inspired him to move to Los Angeles two years later: he remembers thinking he would move to America because they understand the sensibility of quality trash.
  • Several characters are named after popular horror film directors and other cult figures, among them John Carpenter, George A. Romero, Wes Craven, Frank Henenlotter, Stephen King, John Waters, Dan O'Bannon, Edward D. Wood Jr. and Tod Browning.
