Plot summary
An amateur filmmaker named Tim Wilson returns to his family after his younger brother Sean kills himself. At the house he finds his parents throwing out Sean's belongings, among them notes, drawings, tapes and recordings about an obscure internet legend called Project MKHEXE. Sean's phone holds unsettling videos recorded on the day he died, pointing to an experiment at a childhood treehouse. His parents deny everything, so Tim turns to Sean's friend Nicole, who tells him Sean had become fixated on a CIA mind control program from the Cold War, said to have mixed broadcast technology, hypnosis and occult practice and to have driven people mad through a Nightmare Machine before it was covered up. As traces of MKHEXE disappear from the internet, Tim and Nicole begin shooting a documentary to investigate.
