Trailer

Plot summary

Chris Hansen hosts To Catch a Predator, whose sting operations run with the vigilante group Perverted-Justice. Would-be predators are lured to a house expecting sex with a minor, played by an adult decoy; Hansen and his camera crew then confront them, and police arrest them. Andie Bender, Hansen's producer, meets with a network executive who notes the show's ratings and moves it into the primetime slot, against ABC's Lost. Dan Plum is hired as a decoy and pretends to be a teenage boy, a job he first finds disorienting. Hansen ends an affair with a younger woman in Fort Myers, Florida, not knowing that he is being photographed, and someone from the National Enquirer asks him for comment on a story about the affair.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Primetime (2026)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Chris Hansen said a lawyer from A24 asked him, before a private screening, to sign a contract that would 'take away his name, image, and brand' and any legal rights coming out of the movie; he refused after consulting his lawyers and chose not to see the film.
  • Chris Hansen bought pre-show advertising for every theatrical screening of Primetime, appearing in a kitchen like the ones from his sting operations to ask audiences to 'take a seat' and promote his streaming service TruBlu.
  • Lance Oppenheim's idea of Hansen adopting a 'strange, performative version of himself' came after the director's wife hired Hansen to film a Cameo video congratulating Oppenheim on his 2024 documentary Spermworld; Oppenheim called the film an 'adaptation' of that video.
  • Robert Pattinson and Brighton McCloskey came across Ajon Singh's draft, and Pattinson joined Primetime as a producer and convinced Lance Oppenheim to direct; he at first resisted starring but was won over by the 'compelling' version of Hansen the pair wrote.
