Plot summary

College student Lucy Pinborough flies back to her home in Hawaii after years away, with her best friend Kate, who has also invited Hannah, and two college men they meet while boarding, Drew and Brad. The house is built into a cliff. There she finds her sister Erin, Kate's brother Nick, and her father Adam, a deaf novelist who signs; also waiting is Ben, the family's adopted chimpanzee, whom Lucy's late mother, a linguistics professor, taught to communicate through a tablet's custom soundboard. Lucy gives him a teddy bear. That night Ben acts strangely, and Adam finds a dead mongoose inside Ben's enclosure and sees that it bit Ben. He arranges for a veterinarian to check on Ben while he goes to a book signing.
