Plot summary
Father Greg Pilkington is a young priest posted to St Mary's, a parish in inner-city Liverpool. There he discovers that the older priest he works beside, Father Matthew Thomas, is carrying on a sexual relationship with Maria Kerrigan, the rectory housekeeper. Father Thomas is also a left-wing radical who argues for Liberation Theology and quarrels with the Bishop, who nonetheless respects what he can do. Greg's traditional conservatism and his religious convictions are affronted by this open disregard of the vow of celibacy, while he himself is struggling with homosexual feelings. At a local meeting place for gay men he gets to know a man called Graham, and the two become physically involved.
